Get Up, Gear Up, Get Out There!

As snow melts and ice thaws, it’s time to transition into spring & summer activities. Although you very well might get the chance to ski and board into June or maybe July even, new outdoor ventures are ready and waiting.

Let’s talk climbing. Mountain climbing at the Owens River Gorge offers short, yet challenging climbs. Climbers have their pick at many of the Sierra’s peaks, or at the nearby walls of Yosemite. Climbing is an empowering fusion of athleticism and critical thinking. It’s an absolute blast regardless of your skill set and experience.

Open year-round, the Sierra Rock Climbing School guides will give you their attention and instruction to improve your climbing. And of course, children and families are welcome. Guides are available seasonally to lead visitors on Ice Climbs in Lee Vining Canyon. Maybe you’ll leave the kids back at the village for this one…

Okay slightly less intense, but no less lovely; let’s talk hiking. Mammoth Lakes area in the spring offers breath-taking landscapes and warmer temperatures.

Yosemite National Park and Tuolumne Meadows become accessible from Mammoth usually in May for Memorial Day Weekend. Ask anyone, there really isn’t a better time to visit the valley and Yosemite. Why? The waterfalls are the most full they’ll be all year. If that weren’t enough, flowers are in bloom and they’re beautiful snow caps still resting atop the mountain peaks.

Spring landscapes in Mammoth are simply hypnotic. Get up, gear up, and get out there!

Cheers from the Mammoth RBO Team!

Mammoth Town Council: This Season

The Mammoth Town Council held a meeting recently on economic matters of the town.

In the meeting, the remainder of the winter peak season was discussed. Jack Copeland, President of the town Chamber of Commerce said, “We will have to work hard to get people here and beef up the focus on service.” This was said with the understanding that this is the slow season coming up, and all Mammoth businesses needed to work harder to make the very most of it.

Copeland mentioned this meant big sales in Mammoth; lift tickets, lodging, ski equipment and clothing.

He also brought forward his desire to “bump up” customer service among Mammoth businesses. Copeland believes the culture is lacking and all need to “treat everyone like a local.” The Chamber will hold workshops for local businesses to address this situation.

Amid claims of imprudent staffing and inefficiency, Mayor Matthew Lehman assured the board that the town is running at “zero profit with no reserves municipality”, “They’re pushed pretty hard.” The mayor said, speaking of the town’s departments.

Mayor Lehman is participating in the San Diego Marathon, which will later lead to a marathon in Mammoth Lakes. He plans to participate for the sake of publicity for the town. But why this is news at all, is because of a request he has made to be reimbursed $199 for his flight to San Diego.

The Council tried to see if Mammoth Lakes Tourism could pay Lehman, but Town Attorney Andy Morris said there are restrictions on a third party paying. He said it would be considered a “gift to the Town.” The Council did indeed approve the reimbursement. The council’s voting results were 4 to nothing.

To Memorial Day & Beyond!

Two years ago, Mammoth celebrated a whopping 668 inches of snow setting a town record! Beginning in October, Mammoth has seen 288.8 inches so far this year, but that and projections of a few coming storms has the ski resort planning to remain open through Memorial Day! Wahoo!

Up from last year, the town tourism board estimates lodging occupancy to be at around 60%. (Here at Mammoth RBO, occupancy continues to float significantly higher. Hey, just saying.)

Mountain biking trails at Mammoth are now up, as well as the Sierra Star golf course, so lots to do this month!

Mammoth Mountain has reported 183 inches at the 11,053-foot summit, and a base depth of 83 inches at the main lodge. The record set back in 2011 carried the ski season into the July 4th holiday, so let’s see what we can do!

Happy Monday from the Mammoth RBO Team!

Fishing In The Sierras

Hey all!

Spring time means fishing time in the Sierra Nevada’s!
If you are new to fishing, familiarize yourself with the wealth of knowledge below:

Are you looking to try fishing or only foresee yourself going once, maybe twice this year? Not a problem.

Try if you can, to work July 6th, or September 7th into your busy calendar. These are the two days a year that you can fish without carrying a fishing license. But, like everything in life, there’s a few exceptions or distinctions to note. We won’t bore you, click here to learn more.

Okay, so you needed both hands to lift up your calendar weighed down with appointments and To-do’s; and you can’t make these dates. Sacrebleu! (You know, the French curse ‘sacred blue.’…it means the ocean? Oh never mind.)

Well don’t cha worry ’bout a ting. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife offers licenses for as short as one, two, or ten days for a reduced amount.

If you are fifteen years old and are reading this between nose-picking and angry birds; Congrats! Anyone under the age of 16 does not need to purchase a license. Now back to playing angry birds.

Everyone over the age of 16, you can purchase your fishing license at various sporting retail locations, CDFW Sale offices, or of course on the inter-web. (George Bush slang for: the world wide web.)

Once you have your license, you no longer have to make a fashion statement of wearing it on your person, above the waist. The law requiring this silliness went away in 2010.

Your license is valid for a calendar year January 1st through December 31st, or for the rest of the year following the date of purchase.

That’s all for now, get your tackle box together!

Brought to you by the Mammoth RBO Team!

Dawn to Dusk: Surf, Race, Ski.

In less than nine hours, NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson and four other extreme athletes, managed to surf Huntington Beach, race at two hundred miles per hour at the Auto Club Speedway, and ski the slopes at Mammoth Mountain.

Phew, it’s exhausting just reading that! That’s over three hundred and fifty miles covered from dawn to dusk with much thanks to Johnson’s private jet.

“I met some great athletes,” Johnson said. “Only in my home state can you do all three of those cool things in one day. I’m proud of that.” In attendance for this wild ride, was snowboarder Eddie Wall, ski racer Chris Benchetler, surfer Ian Walsh and standup paddler Dave Kalama.

“I was most nervous about the surfing,” Johnson said. “There are no guarantees of catching a wave and I didn’t want to lay a big goose egg there. I don’t think the other guys felt I could catch a wave and ride it, but I did. It wasn’t the prettiest thing.”

“The hardest part is you ride the wave in, and then you have to paddle out through all that stuff again. That’s tough. We were in the water for an hour and a half. At the end, my arms felt like they were going to fall off.”

Johnson may have felt weary in Surf City, but afterwards it was his chance to shine on the 2-mile track in Fontana.

“It was fun to see how excited those guys were to drive a race car,” Johnson said. “They were so thrilled to ride around and make laps on their own.”

For the final venue, everyone hopped back on Johnson’s plane and flew to Mammoth Mountain to take on the slopes.

“I feel like I’m a far better skier than a surfer,” Johnson said. “So the day went from really nervous, completely comfortable, then pretty comfortable again.”

“We went through some gates and they timed us, which was fun. We did some small little jumps, too, but those guys just fly. It was fun just zipping down the mountain with them.”
