Mammoth Town Council: This Season

The Mammoth Town Council held a meeting recently on economic matters of the town.

In the meeting, the remainder of the winter peak season was discussed. Jack Copeland, President of the town Chamber of Commerce said, “We will have to work hard to get people here and beef up the focus on service.” This was said with the understanding that this is the slow season coming up, and all Mammoth businesses needed to work harder to make the very most of it.

Copeland mentioned this meant big sales in Mammoth; lift tickets, lodging, ski equipment and clothing.

He also brought forward his desire to “bump up” customer service among Mammoth businesses. Copeland believes the culture is lacking and all need to “treat everyone like a local.” The Chamber will hold workshops for local businesses to address this situation.

Amid claims of imprudent staffing and inefficiency, Mayor Matthew Lehman assured the board that the town is running at “zero profit with no reserves municipality”, “They’re pushed pretty hard.” The mayor said, speaking of the town’s departments.

Mayor Lehman is participating in the San Diego Marathon, which will later lead to a marathon in Mammoth Lakes. He plans to participate for the sake of publicity for the town. But why this is news at all, is because of a request he has made to be reimbursed $199 for his flight to San Diego.

The Council tried to see if Mammoth Lakes Tourism could pay Lehman, but Town Attorney Andy Morris said there are restrictions on a third party paying. He said it would be considered a “gift to the Town.” The Council did indeed approve the reimbursement. The council’s voting results were 4 to nothing.

Cheers from the Mammoth RBO Team!
