2013 Winter Biathlon

Hi all!

There is just one week left before the annual Mammoth Winter Biathlon!

If you have not registered yet, you only have till midnight, Tuesday. All the information and sign-ups are available here.

You can also register for shooting clinics at the same link.

Michael Karch and his wife Kim, started the Mammoth Biathlon Project in 2006. Their goal has been to create a grass roots movement to generate excitement about Nordic sports. Biathlons such as this have much momentum in Europe but have really just started to take hold in North America.

Michael knew Mammoth was the perfect location for this event. After only a few years it has gained the attention of athletes seeking a place for high-altitude training. But despite the trained athletes in attendance the event is welcome to everyone!

There is no experience required, no worries! There are firearm experts readily available to help all participants. They need all your help, so head over to the link below to volunteer.

Have a blast!

Happy Friday from the Mammoth RBO Team!

Small Town Charm

Mammoth Lakes Police make a case for small town charm.

Much like the police department of any town, when a storm comes pouring in; so do the many calls. During the last storm, the MLPD responded to a call for a driver who had lost control of his truck around a bend.

No one was hurt, but in the shuffle back to the roadway the driver lost his wedding ring in the snow.

The man has since returned to San Diego with his wife. On a sunny day this past week, Mammoth Police took advantage of a lull in calls, and headed over to the ring’s location with a metal detector. After moving about briefly, Detective Hornbeck’s detector began to sound and the precious ring was found.

Mammoth Police Chief Dan Watson commented: “I’d like to add that this is the type of service that small town policing provides. I have encouraged our personnel to do whatever they can to solve a problem and not be satisfied with simply doing what is required…And,” said the Chief, ”I’m guessing the owner is no longer in hot water with his wife.”

Our hats are off to you MLPD!

Cheers from the Mammoth RBO Team!

Holy Hot Springs!

It seems almost fictional to be amongst the deepest snow in the Continental U.S., and yet be pleasantly soaking in a natural pool at over a hundred degrees.

The hot springs in the Mammoth Lakes area sustain naturally, and are free of charge to visitors.

Make your way just south of Bridgeport to Travertine Hot Spring and slide into one hundred and three degree water. You will feel simply overwhelmed by the magnificent Sierra mountain range laid out before you.

Another location just 14 miles south of Mammoth Lakes is known as Crowley Hot Spring.

When you arrive at Crowley, you have your pick at a pool or smaller tub. The tub remains at about a hundred and five degrees, while the pool hovers at about ten degrees less.

Crowley is available for use year-round but snowfall in the winter may make the road impassable. What. A. View.

Our last recommendation is Buckeye Hot Spring. As if the other locations were not amazing enough, at Buckeye you have your choice between two soaking pools, right along side a mountain stream. The water here remains at a temperature of about a hundred degrees.

Lovely!

Cheers from the Mammoth RBO Team!

"Hotel Impossible" Mammoth Visit

People from all over the globe got a look at Mammoth Lakes last night.

The Travel Channel’s “Hotel Impossible," a new series on improving interesting hotels, featured Mammoth Lakes’ Alpenhof Lodge last night. With a search for the right ski town in the West, the Hotel Impossible team found the Alpenhof Lodge intriguing. After a questionnaire and inspection of the lodge, Host Anthony Melchiorri showed up to begin the shoot.

Melchiorri comes from a background of twenty years in the hospitality business, working for hotspots like the Algonquin and the New York’s Plaza Hotel. His focus is to consult the management, and to address any major issues with the hotel.

Go to the Travel Channel’s website, to catch some brief footage from last night’s show.

Mammoth: What Drought?

The Sierra Nevadas & California at large are progressing into a drought this season.

It appears after a record dry winter, California will be headed for a drought. Regardless of the state and regional trend, Mammoth Mountain appears to be close to it's seasonal average precipitation.

The mountain received about two hundred and sixty-nine inches of snow this season, according to the Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol. With an average of three hundred and fifty inches, the season is not too far behind.

As a result of the area's snowpack data, Mammoth Mountain will be open through Memorial Day this year. Yay!

Get this -- The Sierras provide around one third of all the state’s water. Wow. At this point in the season, they are measuring at about sixty-five percent of the average precipitation. The National Weather Service's projections for March, doesn't seem to show much coming precipitation. They expect it to be a drier month than in year's prior.

The positive:

The mountain will remain open through Memorial Day.

The negative:

The water supply & agriculture of much of California may be negatively affected this Spring.

-Happy Monday, from the Mammoth RBO Team!
