Who knows the real story of this woman?
The grave of M JE Townsend. The name belongs to a woman who came to live in Mammoth with her husband during the mining times. There are 2 different stories. One says she was accidentally shot by her husband and the other says that there really is no information on how she actually died. You can find her grave through the site called mammoth lakes-find a grave and you can have flowers put on the grave. But who knows the real story?

The Three Best and Worst Things about Owning a Vacation Rental.
You have been thinking for a long time to buy a vacation rental in the mountains, of course there is no other place than Mammoth. So what are the best and worst reasons for owning a vacation rental?

#1 BEST: You can say you have a place in Mammoth. Gods country! Nature, Beauty and Serenity! You can come and go whenever you want (provided your place is not rented) and not have to pay rent. It does not get much better than this!
#1 Worst: You are now responsible for all the repairs, Taxes and all the other stuff that comes up :(

#2 Best: Revenue, revenue and more revenue! That makes you :)
#2 Worst: Revenue! It likes to work hand in hand with Mother Nature your silent partner. Some years your partner is generous and bountiful providing lots of snow and lots of revenue in other years
your partner is on an austerity program and your revenue is leaner. The bottom line is no matter the type of year Mother Nature dishes out your will have revenue and the net amount will be dependent on the management company you choose. So choose wisely it may make or break your dream!

#3 Best: You are now a part of the Mammoth Community! A member of this grounded and down to earth community with all it’s perks and flaws. A community that is growing and struggling to keeps it identity and individuality, a community where your voice can be heard if in unison with others.
#3 Worst: Leaving Mammoth is difficult but your home wherever it is, is home. However, Mammoth is now your home too. The tag and pull is hard as your mind and heart want to remain here in the Mountains, part of the snow, trees, rocks, bears, deer, trails, lakes, fish and so much more. Here where you count unlike at home where you are just 1 of millions.

Fun things to do, right now in Mammoth!
Bodie State Historic Park: Hwy. 270 is currently open to the west's best-preserved ghost town. This road is rarely open in winter! (Note: Last 3 miles on dirt road are rough. Drive slowly and please use caution.)

Monitor Pass: Take State Rte. 89 through this east-west connector and beautiful northern Mono County.

Mono Lake's South Tufa: Take Hwy. 120 East to the South Tufa Road which ends at a well-graded parking area, interpretive kiosk, and a boardwalk down to the lake's mystical shoreline.

Parker Lake Trailhead is accessible from the June Lake Loop's north end for a perfect 4-mile round trip hike.

June Lake Loop: Rarely is the entire Loop (Hwy. 158) open in January but this year it is, providing drive-to access to beautiful Silver Lake and the frozen waterfalls above it (keep an eye out for ice climbers!).

Mammoth Lakes Basin. The cross-country ski track at Tamarack is open and 12 km of groomed trails are available. Adjacent to Tamarack's fee-based trail system is a free trail, open to all for hiking, snowshoeing, and walking the dogs (on leash) up to Lake Mary and Horseshoe Lake.

Convict Lake. An easy 3-mile hike circles the dramatic Convict Lake. Watch for snowy, icy patches on the trail. Convict Lake Resort is open for lodging and dining.

Rock Creek: South of Mammoth Lakes, the trails in this popular area are beautiful to see in winter with icy creeks and snowy lakes. Rock Creek Lodge and Tom's Place both offer winter lodging and dining.

*Hikers, always be prepared for winter conditions, no matter how clear and sunny the day begins. Mountain weather can change rapidly with unexpected drops in temperatures.

Where else can you Ski, Hike and Bike all at the same time!
The unseasonable weather in Mammoth has everyone talking. Here in Mono County it's super unusual when, in mid-January, you can drive to Bodie Ghost Town, bike ride, or follow your morning ski session (yes, Mammoth Mountain, June Mountain and Tamarack Cross-country Ski Center are all open!) with an afternoon hike along a creek. If that not enough visit the little shops in June Lake, take an ice climbing lesson, see the Mono Lake Tufa towers ( very cool), or get a group together for a pick-up game of ice hockey. The cold-and-dry weather makes this all possible -- at least until our next snow storm which looks like January 28th.
