Perseid's Annual Visit

In honor of tonight's meteor shower,
we post this beautiful photo of Half Dome against the backdrop of the star-filled night sky. Half Dome will provide the perfect viewing point for tonight's meteor shower.

According to USA today, if you look Northeast at about 11pm tonight, you'll be able to see these streams of night shooting through the night sky. Perseid meteors are fast and bright, frequently leaving trains and, this year, there will be no bright moon to interfere with their dance across the sky.

El Nino meets "The Blob"?

Photo courtesy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As the water warms up in the Pacific Ocean (with surface temperatures reaching unusual highs, as displayed in the infographic above), two phenomena clash forces.

El Nino, which has been brewing for a while, is characterized by warmer surface temperatures affecting the Pacific rim, causing tumultuous weather conditions in all areas on the Pacific Ocean's coast.

While El Nino spans a large surface area, from the international date line to the coast of Peru, the blob works in a circular motion. With this circular formation, species of fish are being displaced and their unnatural shape is making it rather difficult for the water to cool off. According to scientists, these blobs are some of the biggest in 50 years- and so is this year's expected El Nino.

Scientists don't know exactly what'll occur when these two combine, but we're hoping for some serious snow!

Stoked for the symphony

Mammoth is more than just a place for dirt-biking, adventuring, and trailblazing. It is a place for reflection, art, and culture. It is also home to the Eastern Sierra Symphony.

Beginning this Thursday, Aug 13th, and lasting three days, the Sierra Summer Festival will be in town. Virtuosos from across Southern California commence during this grand occasion to form a full-fledged orchestra

It began when Maestro Bogidar Avramov, conductor of the Beverly Hills Symphony, came on board as the festival's musical director. At the time, the festival was just a community event started in 1978 by a group of music devotees who thought Mammoth was a great summer stomping ground.

The Beverly Hills Symphony, under Avramov's direction, played at the Sierra Summer Festival for several summers. As the symphony gained publicity for the festival and the committee began to expand, more and more professional musicials from SoCal began to chip in. Now, they all serve as master teachers at the festival.

FALLing in love with the High Sierra

Many people underestimate the power of fall. Summer and winter always seem to entice vacation seekers, and the colors of autumn are often left unseen, only acknowledged when they have made their way to the ground to make room for winter.

But, fall in the eastern Sierra can be breathtaking. And, October and September are the least busy months in Mammoth and Yosemite, which means you can enjoy their remote locations without the hubub of peak season.

Therefore, as a tribute to fall in the High Sierra, here's a list of facts about autumn in the area, courtesy of the Mono County Fall visitor's Guide:

-Because of the varied elevations in the Easter Sierra, the trees reach their peak colors at different times-- creating even more vivid varieties!

The change from green to gold to orange happens because of the change in temperature and decreased daylight

-The disappearance of chlorophyll (the pigment that makes everything green) in its effort to make food for the trees is what causes the prominence of reddish gold hues.

-The High Sierra is ranked #2 for fall colors in the U.S.

-Mammoth and surrounding areas host fascinating events that celebrate the arrival of autumn: the Bluegrass Festival in September, Oktoberfest, the June Lake Autumn Beer Festival, Halloween festivities, and more!
