So whats the big deal about El Nino
I am sure by now many of you have heard that it looks like El Nino is on it’s way and maybe you’re wondering why you should care. After all, why should it matter if the tropical Pacific Ocean becomes warmer than average? That’s thousands of miles away from the continental United States. Well, it turns out that El Niño often results in changes in the patterns of precipitation and temperature across the continental United States and this can be a really good thing for California especially in the drought condition we are currently in.

Many people probably remember the heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides that occurred in California in 1982/83 and again in 1997/98. As the region suffers through a devastating drought it could be something of a relief if we knew for certain that El Niño would bring similar soaking rains.. So assuming El Niño develops what can we expect across the United States and when can we expect it? By looking at seasonal climate conditions in previous El Niño years, scientists have identified a set of typical impacts associated with this phenomenon. However it doesn't mean that all of these impacts happen during every El Niño episode it’s just that they happen more often during El Niño than you’d expect by chance, and many of them have occurred during many El Niño events. So
The odds are good that rain and snow are on their way and we should have a wet and snowy year. But stay tuned for more information in the next few weeks.

Mono Lake is definitely not a Mono Experience
Anything but a mono experience more of a stereo. We ventured out yesterday to Mono lake. Never been there before but heard it was an interesting place to see. Mono Lake is about 45 minutes from Mammoth which was an easy drive (yay, no LA traffic). The story goes that apparently in 1941 the LADWP began diverting Mono Lake's tributary streams 250 miles south to meets Los Angeles thirsty need for water. What transpired was that Mono Lake was deprived of it's freshwater sources and so the volume of Mono Lake halved and so it's salinity doubled and as a result of the changing conditions in such a short period of time the ecosystem began to collapse.

To make a long story short a lot has happened since 1941 to try to restore the ecosystem and a lot of progress has been made but water levels are still low and this beautiful place has been changed for ever.

I would recommend seeing Mono Lake. It's like no place on earth! A must see are the Tufa's at Mono Lake. So strange looking you will think you are on the moon!

Here are some cool facts I find out about Mono Lake:
DEPTH OF MONO LAKE
Maximum = 159 feet. Average = 57 feet.

AGE OF MONO LAKE
At least 760,000 years old and probably 1-3 million years; among the oldest lakes in North America.
