Adventure to Mt Whitney
Mt. Whitney:
Looking for some adventure while visiting Mammoth? What better way to have some adventure while exploring the beauty of nature than a magnificent hike up Mt. Whitney.
Mount Whitney, of the California Sierra Nevada, holds some numerous distinctions. It is the highpoint of both Tulare and Inyo counties. It is the highest peak (14,505 ft.) in the Sierra Nevada, and in all of California. Finally, it rises higher than any piece of land in the United States outside of Alaska.

Did you know.....
In July of 1864, the current members of the California Geological Survey named the mountain after a gentleman Josiah Whitney, the State Geologist of California who was also the benefactor of the Survey.
In 1873, a group of fishermen became the first to reach the highest summing in the United States. Since they were fishermen they called the mountain Fisherman’s Peak. But, in 1891 the U.S. Geological Survey’s Board decided to recognize the earlier name of Mount Whitney. The name Whitney has remained, even resisting an effort after World War Two to rename the mountain after Winston Churchill.

Hiking Mt. Whitney today-
Every year thousands travel to Mt. Whitney with their hearts set on attaining the summit. By far the most popular trail is the Mount Whiney Trail. This amazing trail is located in the John Muir Wilderness. When it is free of snow, the trail provides a strenuous, non-technical route to the summit, and to Sequoia National Park.

Trail Difficulty-
Depending on your experience and skill level, this trail can be construed as moderate to strenuous. Since this trail is at a high altitude people have been known to suffer from headaches and dizziness which are symptoms that should not be ignored. So it is very important that you do not push yourself past your physical limits.

Wilderness Risk-
Most people are unaware of the inherent risks connected with being outdoors and on one’s own. You are far from help should you have a mishap. For a safe trip, prepare for a variety of weather and plan for every contingency. Create a safe environment by being well prepared and making prudent decisions.

Equipment-
Equipment needs vary according to the time of the year, the condition of the trail and your own mountaineering skills. Layered clothing, rain gear, sturdy boots, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat are highly advisable. Other equipment that is highly recommended is an ice ax, snowshoes, ski poles and walking sticks. It is also recommended that you and every member in your hiking group should know how to use this equipment property before hiking up the mountain (for safety purposes). And of course, bring plenty of water.

Side note-
To maintain the wilderness character of the hike and to prevent overcrowding of tourists there are daily allowances for the trail especially during the peak season. Wilderness permits are required for all overnight trips in the John Muir Wilderness and the Sequoia National Park, and for all day hikes on the Mt. Whitney Trail. So pack those bags and head out for a grand adventure hiking Mt. Whitney! Surely an unforgettable trip!
