Lone Pine Lake is pretty much the bottom of the top- the top of the highest peak in the continental US that is! Located right at the Whitney Portal, the entrance to the Mt. Whitney trail (for which a permit is needed in order to hike), this lake’s crystal clear reflection of the sky and the mountains surrounding it makes it a true gem.
The hike to the lake is 5.5 miles round trip and takes about four hours to complete. A mostly uphill hike to the lake makes this a desirable option for fitness junkies who find themselves in the area, especially because the lake’s altitude at 10,500 feet can make for a challenge! But, it is a pet-friendly hike so hikers are welcome to bring their four-legged friends along for motivation.
Don’t be fooled into thinking the lake is the only natural wonder to marvel in during this hike. Small creeks and streams are scattered along the trail and woodland creatures are ready to greet you on your way up. This weekend in Mammoth, indulge your palate with delightful dishes and wonderful wines at the Mammoth Food and Wine Experience. This two-day event will provide visitors with a chance to not only taste some of the region’s finest wines from over 15 different wineries, but it’ll introduce Mammoth tourists to seven of the most renown restaurants in the area, including Mammoth Rock Brasserie, Red Lantern, and more.
The event kicks off Friday evening with with a Wine Walk in the Village where visitors can make their way through a montage of over 100 wines, sampling each wine while enjoying live entertainment. A silent auction will follow, from which proceeds will benefit higher education and arts funding in the Eastern Sierra.
On Saturday, the event will launch into full speed with the “Grand Tasting”, where seven of Mammoth’s most renown restaurants will fight for the prize of “Best Dish”, selected by you- the guests! A celebrity chef battle later in the evening will promise that things won’t wind down too easily. Famous chefs from both LA and Mammoth will be competing for the title.

We often talk about the great activities Mammoth has to offer, but every once in a while we like to stop and remind people that Mammoth's wonder is rooted in its pure, unobstructed views and scenery.
Whether it's sitting by a lake with your fishing rod, watching the trees sway as you wait for something to bite or catching a scenic gondola ride to the summit of Mammoth Mountain at 11,053 feet, remember to end your upcoming vacation with a perfect sunset.

There are few things in life more rewarding than to immerse yourself in nature and realize just how small you are compared to your surroundings.
Each moment in our lives must be appreciated fully-- from daybreak to day's end! So, with that, we leave you with this beautiful picture of the sunrise from the trail to the top of Mt. Whitney, overlooking the eastern Sierra and Owen's Valley.
At 14,505 feet, Mt. Whitney is the highest summit in the contiguous United States- and it's located just 100 miles from Mammoth!
The 22-mile hike can take anywhere from 12-16 hours and guides you along the untouched beauty of Lone Pine Creek and Inyo National Forest. Permits are required to make the climb, but boy is it a climb to make!
Not everyone can make the trek, but it sure seems the views are worth it. Have a great weekend, mountain lovers!

Aside from the smell of freshly cut grass and the feeling of the sun on our faces, our favorite thing about summer is Opening Day for the Mammoth Bike Park and Adventure Center.
Both of these thrilling experiences kick off tomorrow at around 9 a.m. Gondolas and shuttles will be available at the Bike Park to take riders up to some of the more challenging trails. Spanning over 3,500 acres and offering terrain for every experience level, the Bike Park is a great outing for the adrenaline-seeking family.
And that’s not all there is to offer for the family this summer. The kid-friendly Adventure Center, which is equipped with a rock-climbing wall, zip lines, and a bungee trampoline, is open until 5 p.m. and all-day passes are available for kids for just $40.
If you’re in Mammoth this weekend and you’re looking for a more mellow experience, the Eleven53 Interpretive Center opens tomorrow also, offering free admission with the purchase of a scenic gondola ride to the center.
