Hot? Think about all the fun you would have snow sledding, it's cool!.
Sledding is an activity that has become very popular for families during wintertime. Since sleds are generally inexpensive and of course snow covered hills are free, sledding provides a great opportunity for kids to enjoy the great outdoors and surrounding nature while participating in great physical exercise and lots of fun!

Interesting history-
The word sled actually comes from an old English word “Sledde” which means “slider.” This is exactly what it does! It Slides! Sleds are used during the winter because they can easily move through ice and snow, and even grass and rocks when the occasion calls for it.
Lots of people think sleds are just for fun (which they are) however, the earliest uses of sleds (i.e., sleighs and sledges) were for survival and transportation. Toboggans are the original snow sleds used by many North American tribes and Europeans in the medieval era for transporting heavy loads across great distances. Toboggans were made from two to three thin hardwood boards that were curved at the front by using heat. Crossbars also made from wood were attached to hold the boards together and a rope was attached at the front for pulling by either man or dogs.
The early 1870’s is when sledding started to be used for recreational purposes. Some British tourists were visiting St. Moritz, Switzerland and noticed some young boys using the wooden sleds for some odd jobs. The tourists decided to commandeer these sleds and discovered that when they sat on the sleds and were pushed down a hill, they were great entertainment. With the help of Swiss craftsmen, they devised ways of improving the steering capabilities of these sleds, and soon sledding became a popular winter pastime.

Today, sledding is an enjoyable activity that can be experienced by all ages and lifestyles. No one is too young or too old to feel the exhilaration of speeding down the hill with snow flying around and the wind whipping your hair.

Sleds today offer a variety of options for people to use and delight in:
Toboggan- the traditional long sled without runners
Saucers- a round, curved sled usually made out of plastic or metal
Flexible Flyer-steerable wooden sled with thin runners
Inflatable sled- lightweight sleds
All of these fine sleds can be purchased from various manufactures-
Mountain Boy Sledworks- Caters to the traditional toboggan sleds. They are made by hand with only the best materials. The steam-bent planks are knot-free, flexible basswood, with hand-carved willow crosspieces.
Snowsleds.net- This site caters to the variety of snow sleds, from wooden to the modern plastic sleds. Everything you will need to make your next sledding experience grand.

Did you know that snow sleds may be a winter pastime for us today, but I bet you did not know that sleds can also be used on sand. The ancient Egyptians used larger sleds (sledges) to help with construction, such as transporting large obelisks from one destination to another. Talk about hard work!

After a day of fun snow sledding come back to your cozy and comfortable retreat in Mammoth. Relax and reflect on the days laughter and joy.

D Day 69 years ago a defining point in history
Sixty-nine years ago today the combined forces of the United States and it allies waded ashore on the beaches of Normandy. Aside from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, June 6, 1944 has become the defining memory marker of a generation that is rapidly disappearing.
Everyone of age to understand when they heard Franklin Roosevelt’s voice crackle out of their radios to announce the Allied invasion of France knew that three years of united effort were paving the way to inevitable victory.
On that day, the situation was tenuous for a time, but individual acts of heroism—parachuting into St. Lo, scaling the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc, or charging machine gun nests on Omaha Beach—ultimately determined the outcome. Beyond those acts of personal courage, D-Day showed the enormous outpouring of America’s industrial might that in three short years provided the ships, planes, and vehicles to undertake the greatest amphibious assault in history.

The death toll was staggering. Missing and wounded equally staggering. Many gave of themselves for our freedom. Lets remember them.
