Stay in Ojai and Enjoy Mammoth for Less
Stay in Ojai and Enjoy Mammoth for Less!!!!!

ABOUT OJAI

Just a few miles up Highway 33, but a world away from the headaches and traffic that thwart much of Southern California is the small town of Ojai. About 12 miles inland from Ventura, Ojai is the smallest city in Ventura County, and we are darn proud of it.

Ojai's charms are many. The community has long been known as a haven for artists, musicians and health enthusiasts. A village ”as we locals call it”of about 8,000, Ojai is a vibrant place with so much natural beauty that it gained fame decades ago when the area was photographed to represent Shangri-La in the 1939 movie, The Lost Horizon.

Filled with delightful shops, art galleries and a host of places to retreat from the fast-paced lifestyle that can knot the nerves, Ojai invites you to walk its oak-shaded paths taking some time to drink in the serenity of it all.

The Chumash Indians are the first known residents of Ojai, and it is from their word "ahwaia" meaning 'moon' that the name Ojai is derived. One of the oldest towns in Ventura County, Ojai was settled in the 1800s and incorporated as a city in 1921. Nestled in the Ojai Valley, the town is surrounded by peaks that give off a glow in the evening light known as the pink moment.

The city's self-styled nickname is "The Shangri-La of Southern California", referring to the similarities between the health-and-spirituality-focused region and the mystical sanctuary of James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon.

Begin your journey through the Ojai Village with the Ojai Trolley stopping regularly in front of Casa Ojai Inn or if you are feeling adventurous you can rent a bike and ride the Ojai Valley Trail, a paved trail that leads you through Ojai and beyond to the beautiful Ventura County beaches. Our picturesque Libbey Park, located in the center of our small town, rests underneath a canopy of large oak trees with a playground for the kids and a bandstand for our local Summer Night Concerts. Libbey Park is also the home of the public tennis courts used for the finals of The Ojai Tennis Tournament and the Libbey Bowl amphitheater which hosts Ojai's famous Music Festival and numerous other concerts and events throughout the year. The Ojai Village is filled with unique shops, exquisite restaurants, art galleries, and spas. Breath-taking yet challenging golf courses can be found close to the hotel and are perfect for year round golfing. Hotel guests will find Ojai an ideal location for day-trips to the Los Padres National Forest and Lake Casitas for fishing, hiking, biking, and climbing experiences. Remember to bring a swim suit for the water holes that you may discover as you are exploring the natural beauty.

Tioga Road to Open in Yosemite National Park
Yosemite News Release

May 2, 2012

Tioga Road to Open in Yosemite National Park

Visitors urged to take safety precautions while traveling on road

Yosemite National Park Superintendent Don Neubacher announced today that the Tioga Road will open for the season on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. for all vehicle traffic. The Tioga Road, bounded on both sides by State Highway 120, is the popular east-west crossing of the Sierra Nevada.

Vault toilets are available in several locations along the road. However, due to damage sustained to two transmission lines, the Tuolumne Meadows area will be without electrical power and visitor services until repairs can be made.

Due to a light snowpack this past winter (approximately 50% of normal), the Tioga Road was able to be cleared of snow early into the summer season.

Snow and icy conditions may still exist on hiking trails at the higher elevations. Visitors are urged to be prepared for snowy conditions and possible treacherous stream crossings while hiking the backcountry.

All campgrounds along the Tioga Road are closed. All commercial services, including the gas station, store, and village grill, are also closed.

There are no anticipated opening dates for any of these facilities at this time.

Fishmas Opener and Items for Raffle

FISHMAS FESTIVAL
The Opening Weekend Fishmas Festival is taking place April 27th (Fishmas Eve) and April 28th, at The Village at Mammoth. During the festival, there will be raffle prizes awarded throughout the two days. The event is presented by the new Eastern Sierra Fishing Coaltion (ESFC) and the proceeds from the raffle, retail and beer sales will go towards fishing stocking in Mono County.
FRIDAY - RONNIE KOVACH FISHING TIPS
The festival will last from 4pm to 8pm. There will be live music and beer from Mammoth Brewing Company. The highlight is that there will be fishing tips from the host of Fox's Fishing Ventures, Ronnie Kovach. He will give fishing tips based on the current conditions in the area to assist fishermen in having the best fishing experience possible.
SATURDAY - MANZANAR FISHING CLUB
The festival will run from 2pm to 8pm. In addition to live music, food and kids activities, The Village is sponsoring a special showing of the Manzanar Fishing Club. It will be shown at 7pm in the Emerald Room in the Grand Sierra Lodge. This is a film about the internees held at Manzanar who snuck out to go fishing....for several days at a time. The focus of this documentary is on these internees fishing adventures and quests to catch the Golden Trout. The room will hold 80 people. I invite everyone to attend this great film.
RAFFLE DONATIONS
As mentioned, the event is presented by the new Eastern Sierra Fishing Coaltion and the proceeds from the raffle, retail and beer sales will go towards fishing stocking throughout Mono County. Raffle donations will be mentioned throughout the event. The goal of the ESFC is to keep the audience engaged by frequently awarding prizes throughout the festival. If you have lodging, dining or retail items to donate please drop off at Mammoth Lakes Tourism.
