Something Different
OK, Mammoth Mountain is great for skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, and fishing. You knew that. Those are fun, really fun and they’re nicely complimented with good eating and hanging out with friends and family in your condo or townhome. Lets take a blog or two to talk about some of the other really fun things to do up here in the Range of Light, John Muir's Description of the Sierra Nevada, starting with some unique winter activities. Early Spring is a great time to try snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and even snow camping. If you’ve never camped out in the snow give it a go for one night. Pick a night in the middle of the month like right now when we have a full moon and temperatures are usually a bit milder this time of year as well. What we tend to forget is that humans have been sleeping comfortably out in the snow for thousands of years. Now of course with mummy bags rated for zero degrees, thick insulated sleeping pads, cozy tents and a camping buddy you can actually end up being too warm at night. One of the things to remember when snow camping is that anything you don’t want to freeze has to go in your sleeping bag with you. Camera’s, boots, socks, gloves, your water bottle, spare batteries and stuff. You can get to feel like your sleeping in a tool bag if you over do it. The silence and peaceful cocooning feeling you get is unforgettable and well worth stepping out of your comfort zone to try something new. Not to say you won’t be comfortable, some of the best nights of sleep I’ve had were ones where the only thing that saw the light of the moon was the tip of my nose. One of my favorite things to do is get up in the middle of the night with my camping buddy, since I’d wake them up anyway, throw on our parka and just stand out under the stars at 2AM listening to the silence and looking around at the amazing way the moon lights up the surrounding mountains, trees and meadows. Of course a few sips of that Baily's and coffee I warmed up and put in the thermos before bed is mighty tasty as well. Truly something to put on your bucket list!
