Obsidian Dome, what the heck is it?
Obsidian Dome what the heck is that?

Perhaps one of Mammoth Lakes most unusually beautiful and bizarre attractions is the Obsidian Dome, a mile-long mound of black obsidian. This unique dome was caused by violent prehistoric volcanic activity.

Although there is much speculation about when the Dome was originally formed, most scientists will agree that it was created as a result of prehistoric volcanic activity. The rock of the Dome came from what is called a Phreatic blast- this occurs when the magma reaches a water table and turns the water into steam. After the water cooled, it hardened into a rocky glass and became what we know today as the Obsidian Dome.

Located near the Deadman Summit, the Obsidian Dome is a 300-foot tall structure that is made completely of glossy volcanic glass. This beautiful monument stretches for approximately a mile long and is one of the largest structures in the Mono-Inyo collection of volcanic mounds and craters. From the parking lot, you can climb up the mound and see the different composition of the obsidian, which is not consistently black. However, make sure when climbing that you take care not to cut yourself on the sharp obsidian.

This is truly a trip worth making! So bring the kids and explore the volcanic history and physical features of Mammoth’s Obsidian Dome!
How to get there.

This amazing attraction is only a 30 minute drive from Mammoth lakes. Take highway 395 until you reach Obsidian Dome Road. Turn left and follow the signs to the Dome. Be safe! Have fun!

Bodie a living Ghost town
A town that was part of California's mining history. Left behind to remind us of the wild west.
