In less than nine hours, NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson and four other extreme athletes, managed to surf Huntington Beach, race at two hundred miles per hour at the Auto Club Speedway, and ski the slopes at Mammoth Mountain.
Phew, it’s exhausting just reading that! That’s over three hundred and fifty miles covered from dawn to dusk with much thanks to Johnson’s private jet.
“I met some great athletes,” Johnson said. “Only in my home state can you do all three of those cool things in one day. I’m proud of that.” In attendance for this wild ride, was snowboarder Eddie Wall, ski racer Chris Benchetler, surfer Ian Walsh and standup paddler Dave Kalama.
“I was most nervous about the surfing,” Johnson said. “There are no guarantees of catching a wave and I didn’t want to lay a big goose egg there. I don’t think the other guys felt I could catch a wave and ride it, but I did. It wasn’t the prettiest thing.”
“The hardest part is you ride the wave in, and then you have to paddle out through all that stuff again. That’s tough. We were in the water for an hour and a half. At the end, my arms felt like they were going to fall off.”
Johnson may have felt weary in Surf City, but afterwards it was his chance to shine on the 2-mile track in Fontana.
“It was fun to see how excited those guys were to drive a race car,” Johnson said. “They were so thrilled to ride around and make laps on their own.”
For the final venue, everyone hopped back on Johnson’s plane and flew to Mammoth Mountain to take on the slopes.
“I feel like I’m a far better skier than a surfer,” Johnson said. “So the day went from really nervous, completely comfortable, then pretty comfortable again.”
“We went through some gates and they timed us, which was fun. We did some small little jumps, too, but those guys just fly. It was fun just zipping down the mountain with them.”

Oakley invaded Mammoth this weekend with their Oakley Progression Sessions.
This two day event was run by Oakley’s team of female coaches, offering personalized help to bring female skiers and boarders to the next level. Sweet!
Before everyone hit the slopes,The mornings began the mornings with yoga and stretching, — AND provided food and Oakley gear! Wahoo!
There was a custom terrain park built just for attendees. Ladies attending were encouraged to learn skills and try new tricks, in a no pressure environment created by Oakley.
One of the coolest parts of the whole weekend, was walking away with an Oakley Goodie Bag.

1. Pack gloves, hat and a warm jacket in your car
2. Plan your food shopping around 5pm rush-hour at Mammoth Vons
3. Tire Chains are available in Bishop and at all Mammoth gas stations
4. Stop by the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center. It’s located at the entrance to Town
5. Park your car and use the local Transit System as much as possible – it’s FREE
6. Use the Village Gondola to get to the slopes at Canyon Lodge – it’s FREE
7. Check weather and road conditions
8. Wear sunblock and reapply – the sun is stronger up here
9. Treat Mammoth like your home. Be a responsible visitor, don’t litter or feed the bears!
10. Most importantly, have a great time and enjoy your visit!

There is just one week left before the annual Mammoth Winter Biathlon!
If you have not registered yet, you only have till midnight, Tuesday. All the information and sign-ups are available here.

Michael Karch and his wife Kim, started the Mammoth Biathlon Project in 2006. Their goal has been to create a grass roots movement to generate excitement about Nordic sports. Biathlons such as this have much momentum in Europe but have really just started to take hold in North America.
Michael knew Mammoth was the perfect location for this event. After only a few years it has gained the attention of athletes seeking a place for high-altitude training. But despite the trained athletes in attendance the event is welcome to everyone!

Mammoth Lakes Police make a case for small town charm.
Much like the police department of any town, when a storm comes pouring in; so do the many calls. During the last storm, the MLPD responded to a call for a driver who had lost control of his truck around a bend.
No one was hurt, but in the shuffle back to the roadway the driver lost his wedding ring in the snow.
The man has since returned to San Diego with his wife. On a sunny day this past week, Mammoth Police took advantage of a lull in calls, and headed over to the ring’s location with a metal detector. After moving about briefly, Detective Hornbeck’s detector began to sound and the precious ring was found.
Mammoth Police Chief Dan Watson commented: “I’d like to add that this is the type of service that small town policing provides. I have encouraged our personnel to do whatever they can to solve a problem and not be satisfied with simply doing what is required…And,” said the Chief, ”I’m guessing the owner is no longer in hot water with his wife.”
