Snow season is back

Winter was a very welcome early visitor as it dropped 30 inches of snow on Mammoth this past week. The mountain saw so much fresh snow that Opening Weekend was moved up eight days early! Opening events will still take place next weekend, Nov. 11-14, but skiers and snowboarders are welcome to hit the slopes now.
So, as the season kicks into full swing, I suppose we can say: "Thanks, El Nino!" Snow showers are expected to continue through the weekend.

4 Ways to Fall Fun

Isn't fall the best season imaginable? Chill temperatures complimented by warm colors all around, the introduction of a plethora of hot beverages, and an excuse to sit by the fire reading your book. This year, fall may not be itself in most places where the temperatures are still above average, but in Mammoth, the weather's just right. And what are all the things that make fall so fun in Mammoth?

1) Actual COLORS!
Among the green, gray, and white backdrops of the mountain tops, the orange/red leaves of the trees stand out even more than you can imagine. The fall season fills up with leaf-peepers in Mammoth. What's a leaf-peeper you ask? This is a modern term for someone who travels to a certain region just to view the autumn foliage. Did you also know that the Eastern Sierra was rated #2 in the country for best fall colors?

2) Halloween Skate Party!
The ice skating rink in Mammoth Lakes is hosting a Haunted Rink Skate Party on Oct. 30 with carnival games, cakewalks, and other fundraisers. Click here to learn more.

3) The Costume Contest
Deck yourself out in your best creepy attire and you just might win $250. This event starts is a pub crawl/costume contest and will meet at the clocktower at 7 p.m. to kick off the creepy crawly evening. Be there if you dare! Click here to learn more.

4) Carve a pumpkin
During a recent walk through the Vons in town a few weeks back, I encountered some enormous pumpkins. The size of a person! If you get a group, you could create an awesome pumpkin-carving challenge. I say a group because I don't think it's a one-man job. But hey, if you're up for a REAL challenge, you could try tackling that too.
